Flood Preparedness: Complete Survival Guide

Floods are the most common natural disaster. Know how to prepare, survive, and recover from flooding events.

HAVEN Team

Floods are the most common and costly natural disaster worldwide. From flash floods to slow-rising river floods, coastal storm surge to dam failures, understanding flood risks and preparation can save your life.

Know Your Risk

Check your area's flood zone status. Even if you're not in a designated flood zone, 40% of flood claims come from outside high-risk areas. Climate change is expanding flood boundaries beyond historical maps.

Before: Preparation

Home Protection

  • Install check valves in plumbing to prevent backup
  • Waterproof your basement (sealant, sump pump with battery backup)
  • Elevate electrical systems, water heaters, and appliances
  • Move valuables and documents to upper floors
  • Know your evacuation routes — multiple options, higher ground

Emergency Supplies

  • All standard emergency kit items
  • Life jackets for each family member (especially children)
  • Waterproof bags for documents and electronics
  • Rope (for rescue and securing items)
  • Rubber boots and rain gear
  • Battery-powered radio for flood warnings

Insurance

  • Standard homeowner's insurance does NOT cover floods
  • Separate flood insurance through NFIP or private insurers
  • Document your possessions with photos/video (stored off-site or in cloud)

During: Survival

Flash Flood Warning

  • Move to higher ground IMMEDIATELY
  • Do not wait to gather belongings
  • Never walk through flowing water (6 inches can knock you down)
  • Never drive through flooded roads (2 feet of water can float a car)
  • "Turn Around, Don't Drown"

If Trapped Indoors

  • Move to the highest level (NOT the attic unless you have roof access)
  • Signal for rescue from windows or roof
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if standing in water
  • Have tools to break through the roof if water continues rising

If in a Vehicle

  • If water is rising around your car, get out and move to higher ground
  • If swept away, exit through the window (doors may be impossible against water pressure)
  • Climb onto the roof if you can't exit safely

After: Recovery

  • Do not return home until authorities say it's safe
  • Before entering, check for structural damage from outside
  • Photograph all damage for insurance claims
  • Avoid floodwater — it may contain sewage, chemicals, and debris
  • Disinfect everything the water touched
  • Watch for mold (can start within 24-48 hours)
  • Discard food that contacted floodwater
  • Have your electrical system inspected before use
