When building an SHTF plan (Sh*t Hits The Fan), the goal isn't to succumb to paranoia—it's to establish a practical, actionable framework so your family knows exactly what to do when normal systems fail.

Whether it's a severe natural disaster, a prolonged power grid failure, or civil unrest, a solid SHTF plan bridges the gap between panic and coordinated action.

1. Establish Communication Protocols

In a true SHTF scenario, cell towers will likely be congested or completely down. Your SHTF plan must account for offline communication.

  • Rally Points: Designate three meeting locations. One immediately outside the home (e.g., for a house fire), one in the neighborhood (if the street is inaccessible), and one regional fallback location (if the city is evacuating).
  • Out-of-State Contact: Choose a family member or friend who lives far away to act as your communication hub. Local calls often fail during disasters, but long-distance routing sometimes survives.
  • Mesh Networks: Use apps like HAVEN which utilize Bluetooth mesh networking to communicate with nearby devices when the internet is down.

2. Assess Your Bug In vs. Bug Out Strategy

The core of any SHTF plan is deciding whether to stay or leave.

Bugging In (Staying Home):

This is usually the safest option. Your home is your fortress, containing your primary supplies. Ensure you have:

  • A minimum 3-week supply of non-perishable food.
  • 1 gallon of water per person, per day.
  • Off-grid power solutions (solar generators, power banks).
  • Home security reinforcements.

Bugging Out (Evacuating):

You only bug out if staying home becomes more dangerous than facing the elements.

  • Have a packed Bug Out Bag (BOB) ready by the door.
  • Pre-plan at least three evacuation routes using offline maps (like the OpenStreetMap integration in HAVEN).
  • Have a specific, secure destination in mind. Never bug out into the unknown without a goal.

3. Medical and First Aid Preparedness

Hospitals will be overwhelmed. Your SHTF plan must include advanced first aid capabilities.

  • Stockpile necessary prescription medications (aim for a 90-day supply).
  • Build a trauma kit (tourniquets, pressure dressings, splints) in addition to a standard boo-boo kit.
  • Keep offline medical guides available. HAVEN provides offline first aid guides and an AI assistant that can help diagnose non-critical issues when doctors aren't reachable.

4. Drills and Rehearsals

A plan is only as good as its execution. Run quarterly drills with your family. Practice packing the car in under 15 minutes, navigating to your rally points without GPS, and shutting off your home's main gas and water valves.
